I got super blessed today. A friend of mine came up to me today and told me she had something for me. She ran across this guy that was throwing away (GASP!!!) a huge lot of books. She went through them and found 12…. Yes TWELVE old woodworking books. She immediately thought of me and snagged them before they ended up in the burn pile.

There are 8 Popular Science Woodworking Projects books. 1985-1991 and the 1992 10th Year Anniversary Woodworking Projects Yearbook. There’s a “Scroll Saw For The First Time” book that I’m hoping to get my daughter interested in. A better Homes and Garden “The Best of Wood Book 1”. “Taunton’s Complete Illustrated Guide to Working with Wood. ”. And lastly a book simply called “Woodworking Projects Yearbook”

I’ve went through a few pages in one of the books and have already found a project I want to build soon.

I am going to love going through these books. It’s been a crazy weekend. School starts next week here and it seems like everyone decided to try and cram things into this weekend. I’ve been super busy and haven’t been to my shop since early Friday. I had several projects I wanted to work on. Guess I will get to them in time.

So while out running crazy I got a text from my friend saying there were lots of 2×3’s out at this place I’ve gotten free wood at before. I stopped by. I found one 2×3. The rest were all 2×4’s. These were 8’ ones at that. I loaded my van up. There were also about a dozen shorter ones that were probably at least 2’ long, some 3’. It was a nice score. This place has two piles. One is sort of a “burn pile” But I’ve gotten some nice boards from there. The other is usually riddled with 2×3s. Which I have gotten quite a few of. This place builds barge hulls. I’m not quite sure what they use this wood for. But they constantly have a very nice pile out there. I probably have about a dozen 2×3’s from the last haul. Of course… all 8’ plus some shorter ones. This time I got 8 2×4s. And they are nice ones.

So… I’m pretty excited about my score today. Cant wait till tomorrow. I plan on building one of JSB’s (Jays Custom Creations) outdoor chairs and tables out of my newly acquired 2×4’s Can’t wait!!!

Way to go, Angie. Scrounging is a good thing. The price is always right. You can makes lots of things with 2×4’s..you always need them!!

I scored good too. I was at garage sale and this guy had a Coleman 3500 watt generator with 120 and 220 outlets and only 10 hours on it. He wanted $300 and could not sell it at his sale. I called after the sale and offered $225 and he took it!!!!!!!!...............Cheers, Jim

Great score on the reading materials! You never know when one of the articles/plans will jump out at you and plead to be built. Well done!

Of course these books are older so they have some outdated designs. But there are several projects that I really like. The cool thing is that the techniques never get outdated. And even better… they didn’t have the same tools that we have available to us now so they did things different. Learning a lot from them.

I have to work today. So I’m planning on knocking it all out early enough so that I can be in the shop by 2:00 and make use of the 2×4’s

Great score on magazines and lumber. Why is it if I see any 2×3 or 2×4’s laying around they are always a foot or two? lol Build something cool and have fun.

Great score on the books!!! Why would anyone want to burn books? Take them to the library, used bookstore, or have yard sale.

The wood kinda looks like pressure treated. Be sure before the application.
Great haul.

Dont think this will quite deserve a “You suck”,,,, but Good score on both counts… :-)

And as far as magazines being “outdated”, I still have a few from the 70s and 80s with a couple things I’d like to build someday. I figure that so long as I like it, I dont care if it’s from the 80s or current…. I still like it and the only one I gotta please is ME :-)

Books are a form of wood! That you got some that talk about wood is a triple bonus! Years ago an elderly neighbor gave us a ton of old plans for everything from yard art to knick knack shelves. Some good stuff in there. Enjoy! Hope your daughter gets bitten by the scroll saw bug! :-)

I was wrong about the boards… They were all 10’.

This is what I did with them….

It looks pretty dirty… But this is for my mom and she wants it painted. Just finished it up about 30 minutes ago. Another late night in the shop. Had a blast. Also got the chance to let a friends son make one of the little mini picnic table salt & pepper holders. He said he’s going to paint it and put little flower pots in it. He loved it and had a great time. It’s been a good day in the shop.

I also moved the RAS and some other things out of my shop and into the storage garage. Tomorrow I will be cleaning and organizing… AND making some sawdust.
