I could use a little advice.
I was about to use a Minwax waterbased pigment stain because I had some left over, and I conditioned the wood ahead of time with Minwax water-based pre-stain wood conditioner. I haven’t had great results with this stain in the past and have since learned that dyes go in better than pigments. So I’m going to get and try some water based dye. My question is, will this “wood conditioner” have a negative effect on the dye? From what I’ve read about dye stains conditioning doesn’t seem necessary. So I just need some confirmation if I’m to go ahead with the dye, or is there something I should do first to deal with the conditioner.
I’m trying to make red oak look dark like walnut by the way. Am I on the right track with the dye stain or does anyone have a better suggestion?
Thanks in advance.
