Topic tags/keywords: question walnut oak finishing

I am building an Automata and am wondering what finish to go with, its mostly red oak with some curly aspen and walnut highlights. there are some awkward spaces and places to get into. I don’t have access to spray equipment. Some of the wood will be running over each other so something with low friction would be nice. I normally use just paste wax or danish oil on my projects. I will be the first to admit my finishing experience is low.

Thanks for you for your help.

Please forgive my Okie ignorance, but what is an Automata? I’m probably not the only one wondering (I hope) but I am the one who has either the guts or the ignorance to admit it and ask.

I think any kind of oil would work since you have moving parts. The oil should serve as a lubricant. The con is that it will probably gather dust between moving parts.

An Automata or Automaton is a mechanical toy that serves no purpose really, for more info check out the link. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Automaton

Automata is just plural for Automaton.

I do like finishing in oil, is danish ok or would you recommend a different kind.

Just curious, do you have any pics of one of your automatons that you could post?
