Topic tags/keywords: question humor

Several times while operating my jobsite saw or jointer I have had large horseflies land on the tools. I am not talking some distance from the work area; I am talking about right next to the blade while it is cutting wood and making a horrific amount of noise. The noise almost seems to draw them towards the tool.

Has anyone else here experienced anything like this? I mean, one would think that the fly would be practically vaporized by sound levels that high, three or four inches from the blade, and yet the bugs not only land near the running and cutting blade, but then fly off temporarily and return for more high decibel experiences.

Do bugs hear like us? Do they like loud sounds?

They also land all over the hood of my diesel tractor when it’s running wide open. Weird.

Horse flies are little carnivores. They hear the noise or feel the vibration of the saw and think they’ve got the world’s biggest pony to feast on. So they come swarming. Then they land on the metal and because their brain is this big * they can’t figure out what’s going on, they just sit there pissed at The Fly God for sending them this giant horse with the super-hard skin that chips their teeth and tastes nothing like Mom’s cooking.

Dear flies are real SOBs!! I’ve been “chased off” more than once when cutting close to the woods. Suckers are absolutely relentless!!

edit;;;; I don’t know if they like power tools but they sure as hell seem to like me.

I’ll have to look for that in my invertebrate zoology books.
I think JustJoe’s answer is about right.

No problems with flies in my shop. But whenever I turn on the saw a horse comes in and calls me Wilbur.

This is weird. Lately it seems like every other time we open the door to the house a fly comes in. And believe it or not they find their way to the shop.

I’m not sure about horseflies liking noise but I was working at my table saw a while back and felt a pain in my leg…looked down and there was one of those little bastards gnawing in my drumstick. they sure can bite…!

I know when I hear power tools running I am drawn to the sound. Probably for other reasons than the horse flies though. They just make me want to dance…

I’ve thought wikijoe could definitely clean up on Jeopardy and have Trebek LHAO.
