Hello ya’ll! Hope your all staying cool, hot and humid here in Minnesota, looking forward to fall! I really need to set up a full shop again for my business etc as its getting tight in my 6×12 trailer. I was hoping to buy or rent-to-own a premade 10×20 shed here in town but its not in the budget right now so probably wont happen. So thinking other options: Wondering if anyone knows where I could get a free or real cheap scrap older shed, trailer, or even trailer home anywhere from 8×12 to 10×20 or bigger that I could fix up and convert into a shop. Thanks for any and all ideas and have a great day!

I’ve been kicking around the idea of converting an old trailer (double-wide) into a shop. I’m finding that I cant replace the shop I had back in 10aSEE for what I paid for that one. I’ve been scouring Craigslist and I’ve seen several possibilities.

I’ve found that searching for a bunch of different keywords works best. Try the following …
“double wide”
“mobile office”
“portable office”
“portable classroom”
“mobile home”
“single wide”

and use the quote marks too. If you search for “mobile office” without the quote marks. you’ll get Anything with the word mobile or office in it. It’ll be a bunch of crap you’ll have to wade thru.

I’ve found several options in my area that could be used as a shop….

Something else… as I drive to work (or ANYwhere else too) I’ve been watching along the side-roads for anything that looks like it may be empty ( or abandoned). I have spotted a double wide that looks shorter than most. It appears to be about 30’ wide by maybe only 45 or so long (most mobile homes are like 60’ long).

Anyhooo, it’s sitting next to a “trailer park” but over on the side of a big field. It’s actually sitting there in 2 separate halves, wheels are on it and the tongues are attached too. Looks like it was hauled there and never assembled, and then abandoned. It has a couple windows busted out but covered in cardboard and there may be a little rot along one of the roof lines. Basically I want to gut it and make it one big room (if possible)

My wife’s cousin is a life-long resident of this area and he’s going to try to find out who owns it. I’m kinda hoping it belongs to a bank or mortgage company and it may have been a repo. Maybe I can get it for cheap. I’ve already asked around and I think I can get it moved here and set up (connect the 2 halves back together) for under $1500. If I can buy it for $2000 or less, it may be do-able with the budget I have.

I posed the question here and you can read the replys I got about converting a mobile home into a shop.

I wonder what ever happened to those thousands and thousands of FEMA trailers they built after hurricane Katrina?

Marty, another option would be shipping containers, they come in small sizes as well.
