I saw this one this morning as well. From what I could tell these sold new for $300 in 2004, so I offered him $200 and never heard back, LOL. Looks like a nice machine but I don’t know much about that particular one.

You made an offer. The ball is now in his court. Sounds like a very fair offer. Since it’s on CL, he is trying to hold out for the best offer.

I guess I was just wondering if anyone had used this model before or knew anything about it.

Here is my evidence that it was only $300 new 7 years ago. Wish he would come down on it because it seems like a good unit but that is way too high. I just hope someone doesn’t buy it at that price and maybe he will reconsider my offer in a few days…

I pay 1/2 of retail for like-new tools. I have had mixed luck with Hitachi, especially their larger full sized floor standing tools. I’m not sure how that particular planer rates.

Good luck!

It’s too much for that planer IMHO. Getting blades could prove to be problematic too, but if you can find them, $200 isn’t a bad price. I like this one better….I’d offer maybe $250 if it checks out.

He replied back that he would take $230. I think I found a site that sells the knives online as well. I told him I was interested at that price but again, never heard back. I may inquire about the dewalt, as I didn’t see that one.

It looks brand new. I have a friend that has this planer and it works great. Send him another email and tell him that you would take it at his second price and want to arrange to see it. He might be busy and not able to get right back to you. Patience may get you it.

I did and he finally got back to me. He will be out of town until the weekend but I told him to give me a call once he got back. We shall see.

I had a shot at a craftsman planer that I passed on.

From the same guy I bought a craftsman jointer. I don’t really want a “craftsman” shop, and I had already bought a delta benchtop jointer for $50.

I should have grabbed it. He was asking $200. I’d bet I could have had it and the jointer for three hunge combined. I was foolish.

That said, stay patient. Wait for the right deal. I passed on the right deal, and hastily bought a planer because it was cheap.

The price needs to be right, the machine needs to be right. CLers have gotten outrageous for the most part, but with patience, a decent deal will come your way.

So are you saying that this is a bad deal BucketHead?

I’m not crazy about it. I personally would wait. I should have waited when I bought the delta. I have since seen decent deals on other planers, and the urgency I felt to buy any planer at a reasonable price influence my decision in not taking the better deal. I should have bit the bullet and bought the craftsman correcting my bad buy on the delta.

It will take some time… Perhaps a month or two, but checking CL a few times a day will only take moments. The deal will come.

In fairness to the seller, I would not call this a bad deal. I would say that it is skewed in favor of the seller, though.

$100-$150 would skew the deal in your favor. The unknown works against used machine buyers. No returns on Craigslist… Prices should reflect this. They rarely seem to any more.

For a hundred, I’d pull the trigger. That one looks to have seen a few miles, and likely needs “new” knives. You could probably sharpen them yourself if they are in decent condition, but I’d mention it as I offered a hundred.

Check to see of all the gear is working.

Do all the moving parts move properly? Raise and lower? Run a board through… Bring a small piece of 1×6 with you to test run. Loud? Clanking? Motor dragging? Strain?

I failed to do so, and learned that I needed to do repairs right out of the gate as I got mine home. I did learn, so I consider that a plus. :-)
