Hi all

Years ago, when I was a young teenager who thought everything belonged to him, I “cleaned out the garage,” including my stepdad’s box o’ scraps. Over the last 20 years I’ve come to appreciate (as I’m sure we all do) a box of cutoffs you just can’t let go, for the next time you need a piece of ironwood exactly 37/64ths square by 5 inches.

So, now that I’ve realized what a brat I was, I’ve moved to Morocco (home is in Houston TX) and he’s getting back to fixing doll houses, making toys (for MY daughter, which makes me feel even worse…), and he makes stuff for my mom all the time. I’ve picked him up some thuya wood, and I gave him a truck load of pallet hardwood that I had cleaned up, but I’m also looking for stuff like purpleheart, rosewood, tiger maple…

I’ve sent him a couple little things off the bay, but can you guys recommend somewhere I could get a pile of little stuff sent from? I’ll probably spend about a hundred bucks over the next year, trying to buy my way to a clear conscience…

Edit: He really likes making his own tool handles, chisels, files, planes, hammers.

Rockler has boxes of assorted exotic cutoff pieces that aren’t too bad for the money. You might also try a cabinet shop- give them $5-$20 for a bucket of scraps.

Thanks for the Rockler tip, I’ll go browse their stuff.

As to the scraps from local shops, I actually had started visiting a few places, but I don’t know any of them well enough to call them and ask them to deliver, and I’m in Africa til November. I might send my brother out though.

Have your say...
