Hi, I just joined. Not sure where to post this….I am interested in making squares and diamonds to start because I want to make some ‘wooden quilt blocks’. Have you seen those? They seem relatively east (I think). Of course I don’t have much skills!!

I do have a scroll saw and a band saw and a few sanders at my disposal.

Has anyone made any of these, do you recommend any specific wood, and do you think I have the right equiptment to do so, I think I do. I have heard you use different woods to make different effects? I was just thinking of painting them so they would look like a quilt with multiple colors.

What do you think? Thanks for any responses.

I would not recommend wood types as this is a personal choice with many factors i.e. whats available to you, what contrasting woods do you like etc… Rockler, Grizzly sell wood veneer variety packages that contain exotic and domestic veneers. Great way to get started.

Take a look at google images and search for marquetry. You will be amazed and hopefully inspired by what others have done.

Since you have access to a bandsaw you may want to visit The Apprentice and the Journeyman’s website. One of the videos shows how to build a jig for cutting diamond. This should give you an idea on how to get started.

Surf the site, its packed with great information, vids, tips and tricks (yes, I’m a big fan).

There’s a blog entry here on LJ that talks about this. It is titled Making Wood Quilt Blocks.
