Topic tags/keywords: wood identification lumber

Happy 4th everyone! A friend’s dad cut down some trees in his backyard and was splitting them into firewood. I told him to send me a picture of it so he did and I’m wondering if someone can help me identify what wood this is and if it’d be worth trying to turn some of this into lumber? I know its not an ideal picture but it’s all he sent me. Thanks in advance.

EDIT: Realize the image is really small once in here so I put it up on my hosting for a bigger version here: http://www.reintroducing.com/apnw/wood.jpg

Looks like oak to me.

Some of that looks like oak and some of it looks like hickory.
Both of which make fantastic firewood.

”. . if it’d be worth trying to turn some of this into lumber?”

Turning any of that into lumber MIGHT give you some 18” long 2×2’s or 1×4’s. Good for making small boxes perhaps.

Thank you. I think I’ll pick some up when I see him next and let it dry in my shop til I’m ready to use it.
