Topic tags/keywords: humor question lawmakers

Below is a news item from the state of Washington:

— Gender Neutral Language: Washington lawmakers continued their efforts to scrape the state’s laws and rules of sexist language. A measure approved by the Legislature this year mandated that references to “his” be changed to “his or her.” Other nouns like “clergyman” must be changed to “clergy.” Over the past six years, state officials have engaged in the onerous task of changing the language used in the state’s copious laws, which includes thousands of words and phrases, many written more than a century ago when the idea of women working on police forces or on fishing boats wasn’t a consideration.

My question is, what is gender neutral for woman or women or for that matterfemale?

Person, individual, party – referring to a specific individual, being, etc.

Run for it, Hans. Prepare for a long siege and barricade yourself in the shop. I have learned persons with male genitalia are best silent on this subject.

I hate political correctness. No need to tell politicians where they can put it.

There was a lady Mayoress in Dublin back in the 80’s. Her name was Carmencita Henderman.
She joked that to be politically correct in her new office she would have to be referred to as
Carpersoncita Henderperson.

DeLayne, I hope that they choose not to ”kill the messenger”!

The point I am trying to make is that they should not rewrite history and leave what is written as a testament to what once was the norm!

Just think of it as a modern-day CCC equivalent. Some politician’s second cousin was an English major in college and needed a job.

Etymology of the word ‘Man’ was to express “Humankind”.
Many translations and many years later did the word ‘Man’ take on gender.

We just need to go back to the understanding that the term ‘Man’ simply means Human.
IMHO people need to sometimes get out of their own way in order to ease the nonsense.

ChuckV that is so appropriate!

scotsman9 I agree with what you wrote but if the law, under strictest definition, is the law then human should become huperson and mankind should become personkind, correct?

I think you get my point, this whole idea is rather ridiculous!

Hans I wholeheartedly agree with you.. I think the era when we were corrected constantly has passed. At the time, I remember thinking are we going to rename manhole covers. Fooling with language is the most superficial kind of change.

I catagorrize this political correctness crap with a weak mind that has very little brain activity to begin with. When we go back to teaching reading, writing and arithmetic the world will be a better place.

Better be careful with that “person” business, old novice. Pretty soon it’ll have to be “perdaughter”.

So what about people that claim to be neither a he nor a her, or some who are not sure, or some who claim to be sometimes one and sometimes the other or sometimes both at the same time? This could all get to be pretty confusing before too long. I mean even the lawyers, lawmakers, judges and police get confused enough already about what all sorts of laws actually mean without making it even more confusing for them.
