Here is a free reference on drying wood that you can pick and choose information you need figuring out how to dry your turning wood. Geared toward lumber industry can still pick up basic general knowledge and understanding of the process.

I hope you will understand how procedures will and can vary based upon where you live and relative humidity for area you live in. Also why rough turning decreasing amount of wood to dry speeds up the process.

If decide need a homemade turners kiln plenty of information on line for that too!

Here are some Dogwood spindle blanks sealed with wax and latex paint, harvested more than two years ago. Depending upon where you live end sealing with wax may not prevent mold or staining. Logs splitting and end checking can also take place whether use wax or latex, or commercial end sealers.

One of these Poplar bowl blanks end sealed with latex has some end checking while the other does not. Cannot see checking looking from top down on either 1st or 2nd blank but may some may show up while turning. These blanks harvested after Hurricane Alice, guess about more than two years ago.

While can salvage turning wood in these pictures drying wood more art than science. What is not shown and do not know if will find insect damage once start turning. I have found some in my other Dogwood spindle blanks turning off bark last week.
