I just got back from visiting Chirs’s open house. Chris was of course there busier than a trader on the NY stock exchange floor. He did make time to meet and greet each of his guests and offered me a coke echo en mexico ala The real deal coke with all the real sugar. I got there too early for one of his havarti burgers as they were only just setting up the grill. But I wanted to get there early while the “pickin” was good! link to his site. Charles Neil was there and I had a nice coversation with him as I had never met him before. All I can say he’s a super nice guy and hes a walking woodworking/finishing encyclopdia. I cant wait to pick his brain again.
I got the go ahead from the wife to pick up some wood for my next project. She must have been is in great mood but she did give me a budget. I had to keep it under a $100. Of course I bought $100 which was actually more than I needed but I couldnt pass up on the deals that Chris was offering up. I first started out at the curly maple bin and meanered over the cherry bins and then to the other side of his building for some quarter sawn white oak. At each bin I was amazed at the amout of figure and the quality of his woods. I had settled on some highly figured quarter sawn white oak for a my next project and had my pieces pulled and ready to go when one of Chris’s helpers asked me if I had been over to the open house special stacks of curly maple and cherry. Of course I dropped what I was doing and went over to check them out. WOW.. at $3.00 a b/f for Extremely highly figured maple I was sold. I ended up with 32 b/f of this gorgeous wood and two of my pieces even had some ambrosia in them. I cant wait to start making the dust fly. If you have time today, head on out to C. P. Johnson in Elkwood, Va. Its about half way between Culpeper and Warrenton at the Culpeper airport!
