Topic tags/keywords: cigar case spanish cedar forstner

I’m trying to build a 3 finger cigar case from spanish cedar similar to the once pictured below. I am using a forstner bit in my drill press to drill 3×3/4” inch holes into a block of spanish cedar.
Question 1: The forstner bits are not long enough to drill down approx. 6”, so I guess I need to use an extender. Any tips of a good, stable option?
Question 2: Once the holes are drilled, I need to sand the inside smooth. Any ideas on an easy way to do this? I was hoping for a little cylinder I could put in my drill press, but maybe that would just be too easy.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Split the end of a dowel that’s about 2/3 the size of the hole and insert a strip of emery cloth (or any cloth backed sand paper). Chuck up the dowel and sand away.

Split your entire blank and use a router. Glue the halves back together. Easy.

I don’t want to split the blank, the dowel idea sounds easy enough. Thanks for the help

Brilliant idea crank!

I’m sure it’s been around, but I was trying to think of something the other day and came up empty. Next time, I’ll have a ready solution.
