Wood is expensive! I have a challenge for myself (and maybe you?)

Every weekend SWMBO and I visit garage sales. I plan to buy something made of wood (maybe old end table or something) and harvest the wood to build something or several something’s. Another source could be Goodwill, Salvation Army, garbage at the curb etc.

Tools could be scroll saw, lathe, router table or table saw etc. I will post results as the summer passes. I invite you to do the same.

I am up for that challenge. Going to yard sales is my favorite hobby. I pick up wood where I see it but where I live it is a rare occurrence. Most of the furniture now days is particle board. I always keep a lookout for tools much to my wifes displeasure. I did find a nice set of 10 Freud chisels this morning with wooden handles for $20 which made me happy and kind of was OK with the missus.

Dan, I agree on the particle board comment. Alo don’t see many tools.

Some of the best finds are the free furniture offered on Craigslist… I’ve seen some real quality old tables and cabinets just being given away because they are dated, heavy, and unwanted. Some are worth fixing/renovating while others are just good for the material.

If I didnt have a full time desk job 9-5, I’d be out scavenging all the time. I’ve missed out on some sweet finds but they come up all the time so no worries. Just keep your eyes peeled, and your truck gassed and ready to load.

The tool reference in my stated challenge were those I might use on the salvaged wood.
