It depends on what you’ll be using it for.

A scroll saw is only good for thinner materials.

A scroll saw is a craft tool and a band saw is a woodworking tool, but don’t do like I did I purchased a small cheap ban saw and it is no good it is sitting in the corner collecting dust.

A good scroll saw is a pretty versatile tool. Cheap ones aren’t.
You can cut brass and other metals with a nice scroller.

A band saw is more versatile for furnituremaking – the one
machine I wouldn’t want to build furniture without.

well you can’t do scroll saw work on a bandsaw because you can’t remove the blade and put it through your piece at a good starting point. On the other hand you can’t resaw your own veneer with a scroll saw. So, buy both ;-)

I would get a band saw first unless you are heavy into scroll work that requires a starting point inside the work piece. You can make some pretty tight curves with a band saw with an 1/8” blade. You can buy a decent used 14” bandsaw in the $200 to $300 range.

A scroll saw is a bit of a luxury and all the cuts exept internal cuts can sometimes be better done with a thin blade on a bandsaw.I would reccomend a bandsaW every time over a scrollsaw although I have both, the scroll saw gets very infrequently used .However naturally if you like scrollsaw work a lot and hope to do this kind of work specially then get the scrollsaw get a good one I spent a bit of money and bought a good top of the range American Delta and I really like it,good luck Alistair

I started with a scroll saw, as my initial projects were focused on scroll work and making inside cuts on particularly thin boards ( 1/8” to 1 1/2”). I later purchased a ‘craft’ bandsaw that could ‘potentially’ cut up to 5” thick piece of wood. Potentially, because practically it didn’t cut it. I have been fortunate to get a large band saw and a woodslicer blade, and I’m sold on the idea of the big band saw. Good luck on your tool accrual journey.
