I just realized that I joined the Navy as a “guaranteed” Hospital Recruit with assignment to HM “A” School at Great Lakes, IL upon completion of boot camp 50 years ago tomorrow! I retired from the Navy the 1st of October 1985.

Thanks for your service!

Had I stayed in the USNavy, I would have been in 13 years when you retired. I didn’t stay that long (4 years). But then, I worked in the engine room. Not much fun. Had I known then what I know now, I could have escaped that hellhole. Too soon old, too late schmart.

David, I’ll humbly say they got their money’s worth and then some. LOL. AtomJack I know all about doing “firesides and watersides” and scraping the bilges. Whenever I pissed off the Chief I worked ( I was 18 and 19 at the time so that was most of the time) for he would kick me out of sickbay send me to work with the “Snipes” for a week or two and if we were in port I would be sitting in a bosun’s chair over the side chipping paint! Didn’t take me too long to smarten up though. Had a great career.

Now, that’s something to be proud of, Larry. Congratulations.
