I sought out a replacement for my Ridgid Magswitch featherboard that was bought in late 2011, because a numnut twisted one of the knobs like he was tightening down a screw and stripped the plastic inside.

The newer make of this model has the same exact model number, but has much smaller magnets that do not hold as well as my original.

What a disappointment!! I hope the yellow version original Magswitch featherboard does not have these baby magnets!

I don’t suppose you still have a source to get those for $4 do you? I was getting ready to order another since they no longer seem to carry them in the local HDs.

Yeah, where did you buy them for $4 each?

FYI, I measured the magnets. The old original version I have has 20mm sized magnets. The ‘new’ model in the package shown above has 15mm sized magnets. So there you have it. A 25% reduction in the holding power of this device.

I just ordered a yellow Magswitch from amazon.com for $40 bucks which claims to have 20mm magnets. We shall see…..

Good to know. I guess I’ll go with plan B. The one I got at HD a couple years ago works great on my table saw. I was going to get another and pull the magswitches out to use with a band saw fence I was putting together. The Ridgid featherboard w/ 2 switches was cheaper than buying 2 individual switches…

Just in case anyone wants to know, the size of the rare earth magnet isn’t the only factor affecting strength. There are at least three grades of rare earth magnets and the strongest ones will have the same holding power as a lesser grade magnet of larger size.

Here’s a link to the K&J website with the details: Neodynium Magnet Info

I doubt that the manufacturer of that featherboard went to higher grade magnets though. Most likely they just went smaller and cheaper.

Yeah, I can confirm they are smaller and have less holding power. I tested it out and you can push the ‘new’ version around easier when it’s locked down. They are not as strong as the original version I owned. I have tried two different Home Depot versions in the last 6 months and they are both like this. A few months ago, I bought it and started using it and noticed it wasn’t holding as tight. That’s when I looked at the back and noticed the different sized magnets. I returned it and just made do with the broken one I have which is usable if I am real careful how I turn the knob on the bottom end. I ordered it again last week and received it today thinking maybe I just got a ‘cheap’ batch previously, but that is just not the case….. Apparently all the Home Depot versions are cheaply made these days. I guess that’s why the Home Depot version retails for $31.50 while the yellow version retails for around $46 (but streets for $40 at Amazon).

Yeah, where did you buy them for $4 each?

i got all of them when the HDs in my area were clearancing them. 5 of them i got for $.01 each. you just have to be quick at the self checkout.

probability theory works! just went to the shop to check and three of my six are the larger magnets and 3 are definitely smaller. oh well. for a total of $.03 for the smaller magnet units, i’m not too upset.

I just received my yellow official magswitch version of this. The magnets are indeed the full 20mm size they should be. I compared the holding power of it against my original Ridgid with the larger magnets, and the yellow is stronger- I can’t move the yellow at all with force but can slightly budge the original Ridgid. So it looks like I got my money’s worth.

Toolie- that was a great score you made. I’m never that lucky!
