I often shop online, and sometimes use Amazon. While I was reading about routers, I saw that Amazon was offering a free trial of Amazon Prime, which gives you free shipping and maybe some other perks that I didn’t bother to read about.

Of course, the catch is that after your first month, they charge $78.00 a year. So I went into the ‘Help and FAQ section’ and easily found how to cancel the automatic renewal.

So I signed up, and then immediately canceled the renewal. Then I ordered my new router.
It arrived with the typical Amazon receipt, without any shipping charged. The following week, I put a few things in my shopping basket without actually buying them and the shipping was still coming up as zero.

In my corner of the world, free shipping is a big savings, so I though I’d share with my fellow LJs.

Maybe its different in Canada…..... but in the US, any order over $25 already ships free. Prime just gives you free 2-day shipping with no minimum order (i think).
Prime is an OK deal IF you:
Buy a lot of crap from Amazon (like my wife does).
Use the “Prime Lending library” for free ebooks. (like my wife does)
Watch a fair amount of of Prime Streaming Video. ( like I do).

Both my wife and I purchase most of our stuff on Amazon. We get two day free shipping on Amazon sponsored items. Have purchased cat food. Problem is they favor UPS which for us has a terrible track record. Poor packing, broken cans. Took pics and submitted. Received new case.

Did have a pleasant surprise when our old tv quit after 19 years. Took a risk on a tv with great reviews. Delivered by truck to my house and checked out in the hose. :)

Amazon Prime has free online videos as a courtesy.

Just purchased dust collection connectors for my chip seperator. From Rockler, but on Amazon. Paying shipping and taxes. But one stop shopping.

Been w/Amazon since they started. Works for us.

We buy all kinds of stuff from amazon. I buy a lot of cabinet hinges from there. We share a prime account with friends so we only pay like 30 per year if that. True about the orders over 25 but I dont always need that much. With prime as long as it qualifies for prime it ships for free in 2 days. Amazon actually promotes this. You have your own account, but it is somehow tied to the other persons. You should check it out.

I’m not sure if they didn’t advertise Prime on Amazon.ca before or not, but this was the first I heard of it. Guess I’m late to the party…

Ted – it is different in Canada. Typically, anything shipped out of the US through Amazon includes a shipping charge.
I’m enjoying the month of prime but don’t think I would spring for the annual fee.

I usually end up spending more than $25 so I get the free shipping anyway. That being said we used to have prime and it was great to get things in two days for free or the night I needing something overnighted and had it at my desk in less than 24 hours for $4 shipping

Not to take Sandra’s thread. I appreciate it as I hadn’t thought about buying from Amazon.

Yeah, buying anything on Amazon is nigh impossible. Most affiliates will NOT ship to Canada. Bezos doesn’t need my money, I guess.

Kat,
Depending how close you are to the US , you can usually get a PO box for $30 or so per year. Our family shares a box in Houlton Maine with our neighbours. It’s all legit and even after duty and taxes its worth it on some items that you can’t get here.

I’m about 10 minutes from a couple of bridges to Canada. We’ve had friends from CA have stuff delivered to our house and then they come for a visit. :)

We have Prime and use it for the streaming (my son) and the free 2-day shipping. We buy lots of stuff through Amazon.

Have your say...
