Topic tags/keywords: walnut

I found someone selling a pile of rough-cut, air-dried (~2 yrs) walnut for $200. Not much for specifics in terms of the size of boards, but supposedly it’s a stack of wood 12’ x 4’ x 3’. I assume that includes some spacing for air circulation but I’ve never dried wood so I don’t know how much this actually amounts to. But I would think even if half the volume across 2 of the dimensions is air, that leaves me with 12’ x 2’ x 18” which is 432 bd ft., right? It seems like I almost can’t go wrong paying less than $0.50/bd ft. (assuming I did my math right) when people on CL are selling walnut for around $4/bd ft.

At first glance does this seem like a good deal? What questions should I ask the seller? Should I take along a moisture meter?

At first glance, yes. I would make it a point to pay a visit to the seller as soon as I could and take it from there.

Post the gloat!

I have a stack of cherry about that size air drying right now.
It was about half sawed as 8/4 and half as 4/4, boards are ~11ft long and mine was figured as 525 BF.
I paid $450 for mine and felt like I got a real deal..
Your calculations are probably pretty close.
It’s possible you have some sap wood in that pile, but it’s still a deal at that price.
