I am finally starting to design the workbench that I have wanted to build for years. I live close to Portland OR on the Washington side of the Columbia river. I know a lot of the books out there mention fir which is readily available at the big box stores but it never looks very good to me. I would much prefer to make a hardwood bench. I have been able to find 8/4 ash and steamed beech for $4.15/BF and hard eastern maple for $5.30/BF. Is there another good choice that would be available in the Portland area? Do you know of good hardwood suppliers in the Portland area? Thanks for any advice. -Paul

Go check out Hardwood Industries in Sherwood. They had some super nice clear fir a few week ago for $3/bf. if you want something harder, they have EVERYTHING.

Check out GOBY hardwoods in west Portland. Just make sure you’ve got a wad of cash. They’ve got walnut and maple that will knock your socks off. Wife and I will be there next week as part of our little road trip.
