Topic tags/keywords: finish finishing disposal varnish boiled linseed oil mineral spirits question

I recently started mixing my own finishes and had a question about storing the unused portions of these concoctions. For example when mixing Varnish, BLO, and Mineral Spirits; what do you do with the leftover finish? Throw it away or store it for later? If you store it, what is your method of storage (i.e. mason jar) and is there a way to determine the shelf life for these home brews?

Scott, sorry that I can’t answer your question, but you might try asking Jeff Jewitt. I have found him to be extremely knowledgeable and a really nice guy. HTH

I have stored that mixture in glass jars for variable periods of time. It seems to work fine until it begins to gel or form a thick skin on the surface. Then it’s time to toss it. The oxygen blocking products haven’t really helped improve longevity for me.
