I just got ahold of an old barn door I intend to turn into a coffee table but its a little rough and I don’t want to sand or plane it to the core because that would defeat the purpose so how do I accomplish a smooth enough to use as a coffee table and keep that rustic look?

you can apply a thin of clear coat.
cut the nc sealer or top coat 1:1 with thinner and spray to your wood. Then sand it with fine sandpaper ( # 400 grade).
then you will get the smooth surface with your texture still in there.

Good luck
