Topic tags/keywords: question

I’m sharpenning my chisels with the generic honing guide and a norton combination oilstone, It is sharpening a little uneven, i really notice it when i’m doing the micro bevel, sharpening at a little bit of an angle. Do I need to file the grooves in the guide in order to square them up? Or could my technique be wrong somehow?

Don’t know what kind of guide you have, but it sounds like the chisel is not perpendicular to the guide wheel. This would skew the chisel off to one side.

There is some play in those guides. Just keep checking the bevel and if one side is off hone that side with more pressure.

Chris Schwarz addressed this in an old blog post, perhaps this may help with your problem. The bed that your chisel rests on might be convex, which prevents it from being held level.

Some chisels don’t seat well in the cheap guides. I have a cheap guide and only my expensive chisel will seat properly.

Are you in the Lansing area? I am from Dewitt.
