I just emailed LJ a suggestion before realizing it would be better to post here and see if others thought it was a good idea…

Is there any chance LJ would consider a service to host wood working groups via private forums, announcements and user management?

Here is a little history on the request… I am the webmaster for the Washington Woodworkers Guild (WWG) in the Washington DC area. I inherited a site of stuff cobbled together by various people over time. I am afraid to do patches and make any real changes. I am looking to move our site to something, even a paid service, where I can focus on content and not software… Ning.com provides a pretty good service that my wife uses for another community of hers, but does’t have much competition in this space yet.

As I got to thinking about what I want, I realized that you have it all here! Imagine if LumberJocks provided a Group tab that might have:
1. a home page the group can update
2. a few group forums – a private forum for a board of directors to discuss business – one or more members-only forums for group members, posting of group information, docs, etc. We have a couple working groups whose members use a private forum on our site. All WWG members can see, but is not public – one or more other general purpose forums for the group to name and use which could be made public
3. a way for group admins to approve members for the group
4. a way to let group members see all projects/blogs/etc for members in the group. I wouldn’t want to make things restrictive. I imagined that if I posted a project it would be for all to see, just as the system currently does. The only added functionality would be having a subset view to see project by members of the group. Sometimes it is helpful to find someone local who has done something and seek out help from them or see blog entries from the local group members, etc…
5. a way for admin of the group to send an email to all in the group (meeting updates, special offers, etc)

Many of the WWG members are already members of Lumberjocks, and if we moved our site to yours, even more would join. As a small group, we don’t have a very active community—who wants to post stuff here and then come to our WWG page and deal with my outdated software. But integrating them would hopefully boost usage.

Anyway, it is just an idea. Currently I am leaning towards just moving to Ning so I can focus on building the community and content, but if LJ was willing to host groups, I’d be willing to talk about our wish list (most of which you already have). I think you might find a lot of others out there, either physical groups like ours or virtual groups.

Just an idea. Any thoughts?

Thank you,

-Ray

I’ll keep my fingers crossed…

With one more plug for the idea. If you have groups, they help bring in new users. Either the group’s users (some of which may not be current LJ members) as well as just new people searching say for woodworking in the DC area finding our group (would want to point our domain to the group’s page, but no need to mask it after that?) who then see the full LJ site with even MORE information on woodworking and want to become users for access to all of this.

Of course, once you start providing groups, then you get into the question of whether you only do it for non-profits or whether companies can ask for a group. I could see a small company offering wood working classes wanting to do a group. Especially if it is a small firm with just a couple employees who know wood working and not web technology who just need a professional looking place to post their info. Something more credible than them trying to mock something up and host it on their own.

ok… I spoke (ok, typed) with Martin and the private groups will be do-able, once we set up the groups option. This is on the list but not in the top priority at this time
