Thinking of building a pergola over my deck. I’ve built more than a few things, and worked as a carpenter for short time when I was younger.

My deck however is elevated over a walkout patio, and is 14×16.

I was thinking of building an 11×14 pergola with posts extending through deck and mounted to the deck joist below.

If I was able to bolt the posts to the joist, would that provide enough lateral and shear stress

I found that notching the joists over the headers helped, but the knee braces really made a huge difference. When I get home, I’ll upload a picture of it.
