I was on my iPad this morning and was going to hang a bit here in LJs, but I noticed right away that certain words in my profile were underlined and bold in blue.. so I clicked on one and it is a Pop up advertisement for John Deere and Lowes…. why on my personal profile? Do I want people to see my page and think they will click on the word Design, art, or woodworking .. and NOT see my designs, art, or woodworking? DO I want people to think.. hey he likes John Deere and he shops at Lowes… NO I DO NOT! I do understand that LJs has to get funding from someplace.. though by invading and adding to MY PERSONAL PROFILE. I would like to know why, before I reword to NOT be used so indiscriminately. I know this is not a place for me to really promote my business… well why are you using me to promote other businesses… hmmm. Maybe LJ’s could help us smaller businesses and offer something to us members, who are the real reason this website is so amazing.. think about it.. change this.. or I will start promoting my business and products in the projects, Forums, and Blogs. Tit for tat.

I freaking hate those roll over popups. The folks that came up with that advertising strategy rank right up there with virus writers in my book. If you use a mouse to navigate they make it nearly impossible to read an article. Until I got a clue and got some good ad blocking add-ons, when I’d open a page and see the hyperlinked words in the text I’d immediately leave. I wasn’t aware that LumberJocks had them but if so, I’d encourage the management to try to find an alternative ad service.

I don’t get that with my profile, or any other pages. It could just be your computer. There are a few spam programs that act that way and they are usually inadvertently downloaded by the user. You could check your browsers add-ons, try a completely different browser or different computer even to make sure it’s not just you.

I checked your profile and I don’t see that – it’s very odd.

I’ve never heard of a malware that does this but it’s possible
you have one.

I run a plugin called “noscript” in my browser which allows
me a lot of control over which pages are allowed to
execute javascripts. You might want to try noscript
and see if that changes things.

Well, I turned AdBlock off and checked your profile too. Didn’t see any either. Maybe it’s a iPad platform specific thing?

this usually happens when you are NOT LOGGED IN to your account. maybe you logged in from your computer (which logs you off from other devices)?

It’s becoming a more common type of browser hijacking – it adds a program to the browser that inserts text-based ads on any page you look at. You hover over the word and a popup ad is there. The scammers designed it to drive traffic through their portals so they can collect the advertising dollars. Here’s one example and how to remove it, but you have to look at your own browser to determine just which version you might have:

You know – I had that happen to me on some sites and I actually wrote and complained to the site in question regarding it. I didn’t understand why the site would send me to its competitors. (Yes – I have AdBlock too!) It was really annoying.

What I found was that it was an add-on in my Google Chrome extensions that got downloaded somehow. If you are running Chrome, check your extensions and see if there is anything that you don’t use. For the life of me I can’t think of the name of the stupid thing but all I needed to do was turn it off and delete it and it was taken care of.

I don’t know if Firefox and Explorer have similar, but I assume they do. Good luck. :)

Maybe one of the admin people can let us know if this is the case. Ms. Debbie? or Martyn?

Ep, I use my IPad all the time and I’m not seeing the links in your profile on my iPad if that helps. Hope you get it figured out, those things can be frustrating!

Well this does not happen on any other website for me.. I cleaned my macintosh catch.. and I have no viruses nor hacked installs… I have been doing Mac computer consulting for 10 years (Equitek, Inc.). I wonder if most of you are on PCs.. hmmm. the two platforms are really really different. Thanks for the link, but it is not for Macs. I went to lumber jocks on three other computers.. 2 in my house.. one next door I have never used… tried my iPad and my iPhone and they all still have pop ups.. not just my profile but anyone I have gone to. I have no idea how long, because I have never before use my iPad for LumberJocks before (too hard to type)... otherwise I would have never seen this. Oh and I add that it does not happen anywhere else BUT on our profiles.

I called Apple and they said it was either LumberJocks lets them do this.. or LumberJocks themselves have been hacked. Again.. you must be logged OUT to see this. so us members, who log in constantly… NEVER KNOW that we are doing this.. only non signed in viewers. SO I’d like to hear from LumberJocks about this.

I opened an anonymous browsing window and opened LJ and turned my AdBlock off. The popups showed up. When I signed in they disappeared. I don’t think it’s a malware or virus issue. It’s seems more likely a feature of the site’s advertising plan.

And after some more searching I find this has been going on for a long time on this site.

Other Forum topic about pop-ups almost 2 years old… sigh,
so i guess the admin of LumberJocks just don’t care. Like I said before, if LumberJocks went to a paid membership.. I would absolutely join.. but if I don’t hear back.. I will become one of those people without a profile… and makes me concerned about other practices by this site, we do not know about… are they sending info to other places for money?

EP, I’m thinking that most people know the popup ads for what they are and can disassociate them from your personal preferences. Myself, since I’m just an old geezer with too much time on his hands and don’t have any monetary expectations from my woodwork (other than cash outflow), am not bothered too much by the ads.

As far as data mining, I’ve never noticed anything that would raise my suspicions. I also don’t begrudge the site a little income if they can make a little money from innocuous user stats. I’ve given up most of my privacy expectations. I can be profiled by Safeway, Costco, my bank debit card and my ISP. I think the only thing that could be gleaned from my LJ usage is my geographic location and what time I get up in the morning (early).

I’d hate to see you delete your account. There’s just not enough guys with interesting hats here as it is.

EP are you signed in? Pop ups show if not signed in or hot links for iPad or some key words. also IOS has a pop up blocker, do you have it on or off. I don’t have mine on and I don’t get pop ups , if I sign out and surf I get them. I am using an iPad with IOS 6.
