Topic tags/keywords: mica powder gilding metallic

I have made some 22 inch diameter round picture frames to look like port holes out of poplar and I’m wanting to finish them to have a brass/bronze metallic look. I’ve checked out a few books on gilding from the library and am thinking about trying the micah powder sold by Wood Worker Supply: . Proper gold leaf gilding is going to be a bit pricey for these sizes and I’m not trying to fool anyone to think that these are actually metal. Does anyone have any experience with this stuff?

Here is the finishing schedule that I’m thinking about:
1: Sand to 220, use a grain filler to help me get the smoothest surface. Depending on the other surface prep, this may not be necessary.
2: Paint – somewhere between a maroon and yellow. The mica, suspended in shellac is supposedly translucent, so the base color can be used to change the overal tint. Not sure what kind of paint to use. Hobby acrillic comes in a lot of different colors. I haven’t seen the paintings that will go in the frames, so I’ll make the color determination after I see them.
3: Buff w/ synthetic steel wool
4: Spray a mixture of mica and shellac. Not sure the proportions to mix. I’ll start light and work up to something that’s easy to get consistent.
5: Finish off with a water based poly to protect it.

I will do a bunch of test pieces to understand how the base color and mica powder concentration balance each other. Anyone have experience with this stuff or any other suggestions? Thanks is advance.
