Hi All,

I finally purchased a Ridged R4512 table saw and it was delivered today. Man, was I a happy camper!

The first half of the installation/build has the saw upside down. I followed all the instructions to the letter, although there was some tweaking to be done. When it came time to turn the saw on its feet, I had my wife help me (250 lbs. plus!). When we finally got it on its feet, something was amiss…the riving knife was at a slant!

It turns out the motor mount was broken.

Man, was I upset!! I got on the phone to Home Depot and started ranting and raving, and they passed me off from one person to another….that’s when I started to realize that perhaps honey is better than venom.

They’ll deliver a new saw and pick up the defective one on Monday.

It sucks to receive a defective product but on the bright side, it’s better to have it broken before you use it then to have it break when you’re using it. I can only imagine what the results would have been if the mount would have given way while you were making a cut and it might not have been pleasant.

That’s a good point, and one I hadn’t thought of. Thanks for bringing it up. I will definitely be checking out the new saw in detail!

Sheesh. Generally speaking the 4512 has a pretty good reputation. But lately that model has been getting a lot of bad press. If I were buying a TS today, I might still go with the 4512. But I’d want to assemble and check it out at the store before taking delivery.
I’m wondering if the Porter Cable 270 might be a better move at this point? Its more expensive, but might be better from a QC POV.

I’m relying on the pretty good reputation. Yeah, I got a bum rap, if you will, but after reading all the good reviews and given my budget, I’m convinced this was nothing more than a fluke. We’ll see on Monday.

i got my r4512 about 3 months ago and everything went together well and so far has been a good saw.hope the new one coming is fine.

I appreciate your thoughts and I think the next one will be fine. It’s just so odd that the cast iron broke. There had to have been a crack in the mold or something.

ok so i have to make 5 post before i can email anyone. I need input on buying a Table saw that will handle ripping wood just a little bigger than 4×4’s. I am just a do it yourself(er) and yes i am on a very tight budget. I have read alot of reviews on here but do not feel comfortable with a certain saw over one or the other from what i’ve read. So please no rude comments just some good advice THANKS, and God Bless…

I bought a 4512 about 2 months ago.. Works great. Never had and alignment issues. Good luck.

Thanks, gearupflapsup, I’m just thankful that HD is being so cooperative.

knotscott, I didn’t even get that far. I followed the directions and placed it upside down on a couple of boards, attached the legs and wheels, and flipped it over. That’s when I saw the broken motor mount. I’ll definitely know what to look for the next time around.

RuggedCross, you need to chill out a bit. You’ll find lots of helpful advice on this forum, but not if you post like that. FWIW, you have to do your research. Anyone can offer advice, but ultimately it’s your decision based on your budget, and the kind of work you want to do.

Thanks gaftech, not quite sure what i said that was wrong unless you took something the wrong way but i do apologize if there was anything out of line. I didn’t mean anything in particular to this site about meaning one saw over the other i just meant from all the reviews i’ve read on table saws in general from other sites. @RuggedCross – no apology necessary…as a matter of fact I should be apologizing to you. I did take it the wrong way because of the bold type and italics you posted. It’s been my experience that when people post with that kind of emphasis, I perceive it as shouting. But that’s my problem, not yours.

BTW, where’s Ramey, TX? I live in Sanger, which is in far north TX, about 30 miles south of the Oklahoma border.

Well, I’m happy to report that HD swapped out my saw with a new one, no questions asked. I was worried that they wouldn’t take it back because I had to destroy the box it came in so that I could get it put together, but they took it back and delivered a brand new saw yesterday. With the kind assistance of the deliveryman, I made sure to inspect the saw before he left…all is intact.

I’ve got the base and wheels put on and am now at the point I was the other day. So, barring any unforeseen problems, I’ll continue putting the saw together using the owners manual and all the wisdom and knowledge gleaned from the pages of this forum and others. Thanks for all your collective help!

Oh, and if anyone has any particular ideas about how I should be setting this saw up, now would be a good time to speak up.

Before you do much more, put an adjustable square in the miter slot and put the ruler against the back of the blade. Then raise and lower it a few times and make sure it doesn’t shift to the side when you change directions.

Thank you, sir. I know about that to which you refer and hopefully I won’t have that problem. Judging from other posts both here and elsewhere, it appears that Ridgid has done away with that particular woe. Unfortunately, I won’t be able to get to it for another two weeks…it’s back to 12 hour nights at work (7p-7a), then a trip to Kansas for my nephew’s high school graduation. I’ll report back when I can.
