I have seen where some have used biscuits when doing the second end grain glue up. Is this really necessary?

No sir. It is totally unnecessary and would certainly complicate an otherwise relatively simple project. Make certain your edges are straight and prepped for glue, apply tightbond 3 and clamp. Leave clamped for 24 hours before sanding. Good luck!
