Looks kinda like red palm to me, though the end grain isn’t quite right.

I have some Jatobá that looks quite a bit like that – I’ve used it in quite a few of my projects if you want to compare.

I’d say Ipe.

A google end grain image seems to solidify Tony’s
suggestion.

hey monte, your wood looks a lot like the same wood i came across a long time ago, and i will let you look at my forum discussion from a few years back and see what you think, read the forum chat and see if this is the wood that you have..http://lumberjocks.com/topics/16674, i think what you have, is the same as what i have…i still have some…

first guess was Douglas Fir

is it heavy?

does it float ?

is it oily?

what does it smell like ?

it looks a tad spalted but with so many species of wood, one never knows

Grizzman
Ive built stairs out of Kwila (we call it Merbau) and I don’t ever recall see any of that crazy assed interlocking grain before. It’s fairly common in Ipe.

As soon as I saw the picture I thought ‘Ipe’....terrible crap.

We won’t even deal with it anymore. Impossible to get a glue joint that will hold even minimal pressure. It gave me FITS!

Monte
Glue two pieces together any way you like or can imagine….after the glue joint cures, stand the piece up on one end and let the other fall on the floor….if it breaks cleanly on the glue joint…it’s Ipe. lol!

It is definately Ipe’. The wood flooring stores call it Brazilian Walnut. Wish I could score some!

What’s “a bunch”? I may be really envious! It ain’t cheap!

You’ll be sickened to know that it was a double length PALLET! He got it free.

It was screwed. I can only assume that they predrilled the holes.
