Some friends and I have decided to journey to London in April/May 2014. That seems like a long ways off, but in reality not so much. I’m working on setting up some locations to visit and wanted to find out if any sites in London would be especially interesting to a woodworker. Does anyone know of some “off the radar” sites that a woodworker would enjoy visiting? We plan on visiting the typical tourist sites but really would like to be able to see some sites that are not in the tourist books if they may exist.

This will be my first trip out of the US and I really want it to be unique – so any suggestions will be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Go up to Scotland and visit the country side. It is beautiful. If you have time, go visit LJ,Mafe in Copenhagen. It is not far!.........Jim

Sorry haven’t quite been that far from home, but I hope you have plenty of stories to tell when you get back. Have fun.

Hm, I used to live in London (5 years) and am trying to think of things of interest but am coming up short. I wasn’t able to do any woodworking while I was there, no space, no car, no stores to buy the tools/lumber.

My husband is a native Londoner, though not a woodworker. I will ask him if he can think of anything appropriate. And feel free to PM me if you have general London questions and no one else to ask. :)

That’s about two hours outside of London by car…and somehow two hours of British driving feels a lot farther than two hours of US driving…

Not sure if it’s on a direct train line or not.

Thanks for the tips, any ideas are appreciated. Barnsley looks interesting. Will have to check out the driving/train situation. I have time, but will be working on it – want this trip to be special. :-)

Meeting lumberjocks would be cool – will have to work on that as well.

:-)

I’ve always wanted to go to the Wharton Esherick museum just West of Philadelphia.

Courtney, Esherick is a very cool place. I highly recommend it.

I had the honor of making a piece of furniture from a poplar that stood right outside of the back door of the Esheric house/studio.
