To start it all off, i was setting in the waiting room at the doctor’s office this afternoon. I was thumbing through a magazine that I was not even interested in, and saw a coupon page for Harbor Freight. There it was….. a 25% off coupon. I looked to see if it was still good and it expires in June of 2013. When I left the doctor’s office I went to Lowe’s to see if this store would honor the coupon. I was loafing around looking, as always, and was going down the lumber isle and noticed some good looking 1×12x8’ boards with the whitewood boards. Not a knot anywhere on the top one. There were 4 boards with the plastic band still on the top end. I chased down a worker and asked him if the price was correct before I got the other 3 down. Wouldn’t you know it,,,, someone put the bundle of good $31.98 each in with the $13.32 each wood. I mentioned, jokingly, that they should let me have them at the lower price. Much to my surprise they said they would do it because it was one of their people put them there and I just happened to catch it. He asked me how many I wanted, and I wanted all 4 of them, and was looking for another bundle that may have been put there. That is all there were, so I grabbed my boards and headed to the checkout line. The employee even pushed the cart for me. I was so thrilled with my find, I forgot to check on my coupon. I wanted to get out of there before they changed their mind, and besides,,,, there is always tomorrow.

What magazine had a 25% HF coupon? I only have ever seen 20%ers.

I don’t recall which magazine, but it was some kind of photography magazine.

Just the opposite of what I experienced a few months ago at Home Depot.

As you can see from my avatar, one of my hobbies is building cigar box guitars. I prefer to use maple 1×2’s for the necks. HD used to be my main source. They then decided to drop the maple and close out their remaining stock. Even after it was all gone, I’d check the poplar and red oak bins every time I was in there. One day I found an errant 8’ piece in with the poplar, probably a return or a “found” piece from the back. While there was no bin label for the 1×2, there WAS still a yellow closeout label for maple 1×3 at .50/ft. I grabbed the 1×2 and headed for the checkout. When the cashier scanned the label it came up with the proper SKU, but a price of $.01 – one cent a foot! The cashier didn’t know what to do and refused to sell it to me, so I called the store manager over and explained that they had discontinued this item, that it was obviously a left-over, and showed him the bin tag for the 1×3. I even offered to pay as much as $5.00/ft for it as I needed it to finish my project. They still refused to sell it to me. The nitwit couldn’t understand what customer service means, and so for one lousy piece of 1×2, they lost a 25 year customer that day forever.

-- I've yet to find a nice piece of wood I couldn't mess up.
