Hey to everyone.

I am new here, and unfortunately, unlike most of you, I don’t have a shop and haven’t built anything since my time in 4-H back in grade-school. Like all of you, I desire to be a true woodworking craftsman.

Little about myself: I am 24, married and have 1 year old twins, Cate and Caleb. I live in an apt and don’t have any access to a shop or wood or the money to buy anything. The kids take up most of my time and money, but life is good. I currently work full time in the Agriculture Service Industry in S.W. Missouri.

Right now I am just trying to read and gather as much information as I can so that when the opportunity presents itself I can hit the ground running. My goal is to someday own a small business building and selling custom furniture.

I look forward to picking everyone’s brains, so please just tolerate me if I sound really stupid and ask some pretty simple questions. I hope that my desire to do this is my biggest quality in making it happen.

Nice to meet you all.

Tony

john,
welcome to lumberjocks! i do hope you are able to eventually hit the ground running, but some good advice on that would be to take your time when buying your tools. don’t get in a rush and buy up any good deal. just do your research, read reviews, etc and buy your tools slowly. and remember, even a pocketknife is a woodworking tool, so…can’t wait to see your first project.

Welcome to LJ :)
I know that we have LumberJocks who do their woodworking in their living room, have created amazing projects while staying in hotel rooms, and someone has their shop up in their attic. So, where there’s a will, there’s a way! :)

I have purchased my first book, I figure I can start disecting that at least. ‘Woodworking Basics: Mastering the Essentials of Craftsmanship: An Integrated Approach with Hand and Power Tools’ by Peter Korn was my choice. I’ve read a few reviews stating it is the perfect book for the beginner to start with.

Welcome, Tony!

I have one warning: If you want to be a woodworker, and you keep hanging around here looking at the projects, you’re going to get the urge so bad that you’ll find yourself making furniture in your apartment kitchen. :-)
