Hello-i am new to this site and also new to painting Kitchen cabinets. Iam going to spray Melomine cabinets and need advice on what tip size to use for HVLP spray gun (for primer-paint-and top coat) as well best primer (was told XIM 400 was good) and what oil or latex paints to use. thanks in advance

Take a look at for reference.

I don’t know where you live so it’s hard to say whats available.

XIM 400’s strength is its adhesion to glossy surfaces. I’ve read that it will stick to plastics (light switch), so I guess it would work with Melamine. This comes in a spray can as well as by the gallon. Maybe worth your while to get a spray can and do some testing. All of the primers I mention have strong odors. Do your priming with good ventilation.

Others include Zinsser, Cover-Stain and Kilz.

Kilz is my favorite primer. I’ve used it with excellent results over MDF, plywood and solid wood.

I’ve always used oil-based finishes over the primer.
