So I shared last weekend that I got my shop all set up. Then I HAD to go make something on Saturday. I let my daughter pick the project and she got excited and decided she wanted to help build it. She picked an American Girl doll bed from some plans on Ana-white.com. She’s 13, athletic and a bit of a tomboy. She never liked babies or barbies so I was surprised at her choice. But… We headed out, got the lumber and she stuck by my side till it was finished.

Originally we decided to give the bed to my step-daughter for her birthday. But after completing it… We both simultaneously decided to keep it since it was the first project we made together and first that was made in the new shop. And we decided to make another bed for my step-spdaughter.

So today I went back out to the shop to make the second bed. To my surprise my daughter was tagging right along with me again. I kinda had thought she was done. Even more of a surprise was that she did not want to help. Instead she sad “Mom… Would it be ok if I used some of your junk wood and made something on my own while you work on your project?”

Of course I said she could. I tired to giver her some plans of some simple things to make but she wasn’t interested. She started sorting through my cut offs and found a few things and started measuring. I had no idea what she had in mind or if it would turn into anything. Sure enough… She came up with her own little design. She glued it up, clamped it and now tomorrow we are heading to the store for some hardware. I can’t wait to see it finished and share it with you guys.

Back to my title… She’s decided that she loves woodworking and says she wants to build even more things. She as projects in her head already. And the girl is a great artist so I think she will come up with some great things. I had to kick her out of the garage to go in and go to bed. So…. Combine that and the fact that I stayed out in the garge till 12:30 tonight…. And we might have a problem. Two addicts in one garage. Suddenly my space just got a lot smaller and I find myself in need for more clamps (lol….can you ever really have enough?) and needing more measuring and marking tools. Probably need another sander as well.

It’s going to be fun seeing what we build both separately and together. I’ll share her little creation tomorrow. And hopefully I’ll get to share the bed. It should be finished tomorrow too.

Good night and have a great weekend :)

That’s an awesome story :) We have four girls and they haven’t expressed much interest in woodworking… yet. Our littlest one is just 3 weeks old, so I still have hope for her! Looking forward to seeing your daughter’s project.

”Suddenly my space just got a lot smaller…” …and her world got larger.

I’m sitting here a grown man holding back a well of emotion remembering my Father and I in his shop.
Enjoy this time, I’m so happy to read this.

Good luck, Can’t wait to see the projects. Oh, by the way: Thank you for this.

You are so VERY fortunate to have a youngster with whom you can enjoy your interests and lives together! GOD BLESS you! Again be safe and use the proper equipment. Get crowded amongst each other.

Angie,
And you “thought” that shop was going to be big enough! Sounds like it would not be too early to start thinking about a shop ‘expansion’ project… You know, so your new work ‘crew’ will have space to work in. Very cool!

My shop is too small for just me but i would be elated if one day my son wants to be in there with me and build something. :)
+1 to what Grandpa said.

Only 1 of the 7 grandkids enjoys the shop.
Just make sure that she works safely. Sure don’t wanna get the kiddo hurt.
