Thanks to all those who welcomed this new guy to LJ. My wife is a carver, making varied things from Celtic love spoons to small animals and elves. She likes things sanded smoothly, doesn’t like “rustic” appearances. Getting sandpaper into small places wear her fingernails off pretty thoroughly. She uses wet/dry sandpaper rolled into little cylinders, sometimes uses the self-adhesive sandpaper that seems only available from Ace Hardware. they roll up nice and tight. But she still ends up with no fingernails at the end of a project. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

i assume she is sanding the bowls. I make spoons too and have experimented with how to smooth the bowl of the spoon. After carving the bowl I use a combination of a rotary tool with a buffing pad and gooseneck scraper. using the scraper will smooth the wood enough that you can finish with a high grit sandpaper.

Check out a hoby shop like a model train shop or this website http://www.micromark.com/ they specialize in small tools. regular emery boards from the walmart/target might help, depending on fine they are/you need.

We do appreciate the suggestions, in fact my better half used the gooseneck scraper, liked it a lot, but it’s tough to hold the spoon still enough to do it properly. I tried to glue sandpaper to a 1/8 inch dowel, it don’t stick long enough to do the job. May try bamboo skewers and epoxy, then throw them away when done. Cheaper than dowels, fer sure. Needle files are getting close, I bought her a set of 6, but she likes SMOOTH finishes…. May try jeweler’s tools, next.
