Can someone tell me why this rabbet plane has 2 positions for the plane iron?
eBay link

One forward of the other. I’m a n00bie when it comes to the specialized hand planes.

thanks

The back setting for the iron is for making rabbets while the front one is to set it up like a bull nose plane.

$30 is a good price on that. Would be the same plane as a Stanley #78.

The plane looks to be in good shape with plenty of iron for $30. However, if it is like a Stanley #78, then it is missing two important parts—the fence and the depth gauge. Without these two important pieces the plane is harder to use. Not impossible, but harder. Depending on your skills, you could make your own replacements for these items. The trick would be to match the threads for the mounting screws/posts.

Greg’s right … no depth stop or fence.
