I’m going to make a bed to match this crib as my first “big” project, wish me luck:
http://www.walmart.com/ip/Baby-Mod-Olivia-3-in-1-Baby-Crib-Amber-and-White/8810319#Specifications

My question is what do you think the white upper is made of, mdf? My main concern is, if it’s not mdf, how do you get this “smooth as paint on mdf” look on wood? Is it wood choice? Paint technique?

I don’t wanna blow a bunch of $ on yards of oak and fill it just so I can paint it white…

Thanks in advance-

I’m not sure they would build cribs or infant furniture out of MDF due to the formaldehyde.

The product description says its New Zealand Pinewood.

Savan,

I would suggest if you want to build your bed out of solid wood and paint it, you could use soft maple.

Soft maple works well, it’s strong and tight grain so paints beautifully without filler. You could use poplar, it’s cheaper, but a softer wood.

Spraying the finish will give you the best results, but you can prime and paint with a really good brush and get fairly good results.

Good luck.

Oh geez, how dumb do I feel! Thanks for pointing that out-

I do have a sprayer so that’s not a problem.

I’m fine with poplar for the painted part and will try out the primer and paint plan. I’ll research the painting bit, any good links to checkout are appreciated, thanks.

Thanks and I’ll try to be more observant on the links next time!
