I’m making a mantle with a large top and 2 legs connected to a body. The top will be bolted from the under side through 2 bricks set at right angles to the brick facing (hope that makes sense). That’s the hatched pieces on the drawing. The question is how do I secure the legs and body to the fire place? I plan to have a recess in the top of the body that will slip up and in a piece on the top, it will fit but not be very secure. Thank you for any input.

I would attach a piece (either 2×4 or a built up lamination of plywood) to the fireplace with construction adhesive and tapcons to the facebrick. Then your legs of the mantle leave a recess in the back so the leg will slide over the 2×4/plywood lamination. either use trim screws through the side of the legs into the blocking or trim nails.

Drill the brick behind the legs and body and glue in dowel rods, then screw the legs into dowels.
