Topic tags/keywords: question veneering joining

Hi,

Know this must have been covered before but I could not see it when I searched.

I want to lip a plywood cabinet door on a small veneer cabinet for my wife. I want it to be as nice as possible (time no issue).

Any thoughts or advice?

I am thinking of gluing but will it be strong enough, the lipping will be too thin to biscuit.

Many thanks

Lipping as in putting a thin (but not veneer) edging on the plywood.

I was thinking of abot 1/4 of an inch wood look right, similar to a bead edging but flush fitting.

Band the door with the same kind of wood as the veneer is and do the edging in the banding. How wide the edging is depends on the size of the beading bit. You can play with stain and oils to get the veneer and the wood the same color.

I think I know what you mean, basically hiding the ply “end grain” or edge with a strip of hardwood. If so, simply use your prefered method of choice to size hardwood to ply. Titebond, clamp and time do the rest. Brads could also be used.

Or….......

if you want a frame around the ply and a 1/4 “trim piece” on the ply face the same method used for installing a raised panel will work. run a search on raised panel door, you’ll find tons of info written much better than I can explain.

Many thanks, so if I got this right, Titebond will be good enough, no need for anything else.

Agains thanks for the advice, was thinking I might have to rebate the plywood and then create the banding in a sort of shallow T to give it more glue area.

And I was a little nervous of of messing it up :)

Yes, clamped and allow proper set up time has worked fine for me. The strength of glue when applied correctly forms a joint that almost always is stronger than the wood alone. It took me years to finally accept this. I too had my doubts.

It will take me a while (about two months) I only have a couple of hours a week to work on it, but when done I’ll post it up.

Thanks again.
