Well I could give you more info if you took it apart, but from the zero in the number I would guess an ohio tool plane. You should be able to find a trademark on the top of the blade

ditto on what Deycart wrote.

It looks like the tote is a replacement. I would say its not original to the plane.

Did Ohio Tools have Bailey make the plane, because that’s a Stanley Bailey if I ever saw one. And I think I’ve got that same plane in my display. Great plane to use. Hardly touch my No 7 anymore.

I don’t believe Stanley ever made planes for Ohio tools. Ohio tools made their own. Stanley never had the 0 in front, like the 08. Ohio tools did that to distinguish their stuff from Stanley.

The telltale sign of it being Ohio Tools will be the twisted lateral adjustment lever.

Thanks everyone. I have not touched it yet because it hasn’t arrived but I could not wait to know. Looking up Ohio Tool Co. makes me more confident that’s what it is. I have been interested in this company lately and wondering how well these tools perform since I’ll be using it. Anyone have experience or knowledge with this plane would be great! I am so new to planes but am putting together a nice user set, mostly Bailey’s and because I am compulsive the new line of Stanley Sweetheart’s, and am wondering if this big fella will compliment my set or be sub par to the Bailey’s and just annoy me? Thanks.

I tend to like Ohio tool and union more than your average Stanley. You will appreciate the super thick blade and heavy castings. Of course Record also used to place a zero before the numbers, but I don’t think they ever did black. Correct me if I’m wrong.

Well good luck with that. NO 8’s are not really common and Ohio tool planes are also not common. I really wouldn’t worry about it. It will preform well with the Stanley replacement parts. You can fit a handle from any of the one’s with a hole drilled in the tip for the most part as far as blade you need to find another 08.

Here is some Ohio Tools history.
I’ve been looking for an 08 for a while. Good find.

Thanks Don. I was all over your site last night trying to figure it out plus i am interested in a plane or two!!! I emailed you about a no. 4 1/2 last week and would love it if you found one. Do you use your Ohio Tool Co. planes? What is the worth of this no. 08 would you say? Thanks. I love your site by the way

Dos the 08 have a frog adjuster? As for value, I was going to say about $80. One just sold for $93 on ebay, so in that “just under $100” price range.

I’ve got the 4 !/2 on my list. I can’t wait for pickin season to start.
