Topic tags/keywords: craigslist alternate terms search terms

On the “Craigslist Posters Have Gone Nuts” thread, someone suggested that we need a CL translator or some such thing to find tools that are frequently misspelled, making finding items more difficult. If you supply the terms, I’ll collect and update them and make a CL dictionary (similar to what I did with the Acronym Glossary). Please feel free to add more misnamed tools to assist other LJs with more improper search terms to put in the CL search box to get meaningful responses. If I have a little spare time, I’ll look through prior postings to harvest other terms, but I doubt that I’ll have time. This should be fun.

Alternate Craigslist Search Terms
Antique Post Drill = barn drill; barndrill
Band Saw = bandsaw; ban saw
Circular Saw = Skil saw
Disc Sander = disc sander
Hand Plane = planer (See Planer)
Jig Saw = scroll saw; saber saw; sabre saw; bayonet saw
Jointer = joiner; side surfacer; planer
Miter Saw = mider saw; chop saw
Nail Gun = brad nailer; pneumatic nailer; air gun; staple gun
Planer = planner; plainer; jointer
Radial Arm Saw = radio alarm saw; table saw; pull saw
Reciprocating Saw = sawsall; sawzall; saw saw
Table Saw = tablesaw; wood cutter
Work Mate = Workmate

When searching “band saw” and “table saw” you also have to search for “bandsaw” and “tablesaw”. People will spell it either way, and apparently Craigslist’s search engine isn’t intuitive about that sort of thing.

@BT—You are correct about the lack of sophistication of the CL search engine. I tried “bandsaw” and “band saw’ and got two different sets of results from my local CL. I updated the list to reflect this new info.

nail gun/brad nailer/pneumatic nailer/air gun/staple gun will often show different types in the same category.

@JayT—Good one. I’ve seen and posted about that too.

@Handtooler—I’ll take your word on the antique post drill. Now I have homework to find out what that is. I guess I could just search CL for barn drill . . .

List has been updated.

Nice to know Craigslist can not put a simple spell checker and cross reference in place. Good information.

@Dave—I learned that from LJ BTimmons just today. Never thought about it before.

@Quanter50—Good one. That’s a new one on me.

When searching for cabinet saws, type in “unisaw”. For some reason every cabinet saw has unisaw in it somewhere and cabinet brings up strange stuff and people usually dont say cabinet saw in a unisaw listing

@Cole—I think if I put up a listing on CL, I’ll just use all of these terms in my listing. I will probably get an LJ to call me and ask about what I’m really listing.

I have a recurring search for “planer”, but I get more hits for jointers than planers.
