I love LJ, but the page seems formatted for 1024×768 monitors. On my 1920×1080 monitor there’s a lot of wasted space on the left and right sides. It’s not 1995 any more, and I think the majority of users have decent monitors, so I think a wider page (or at least the option to use a wider page) would be a welcome addition.

The main issue is when adding pics to blog or forum posts. The pics have to be abysmally small or they get cut off.

I agree, should make for easier reading and less scrolling too. My page is only 2/3 of the width of my screen even with the advertisements…

my old monitor doesn’t even go to 1920×1080 ,I gather there are still a few of us with dated computers/monitors.
This is a good reason to justify the upgrade,I’ll stat with a monitor though,my computer is more than adequate for my use and has been working flawlessly for years.

+1.

Perhaps code the main column width to a percentage (e.g. 70%) of the browser window instead of a fixed number of pixels (e.g. 860px)?

While many computer monitors have higher resolutions, the 1024 width is still common on many of the 7 inch tablets (such as Kindle Fire) and a great many of the computers users I see are still using 1024 width even if the monitor is capable of wider resolution. Given the growth of small tablet and smartphone users, I don’t think it would be a good idea to put the site at a wider fixed width. However frustrating it might be to have unused space on the sides, having to scroll left and right to read the site would be much worse.

What is possible though would be to code the site to use whatever width display the user has available, with some reasonable minimum (such as 1024). Many sites do this, and they are a much more pleasant experience for everyone.

Like TheDane said; make it percentage based instead of a fixed number. That way it adjusts to the device being used.

I saw that after I posted. I had composed my message but got called away (I’m on duty today) and didn’t see his reply until I got back and posted mine.

Hold down control and scroll towards the monitor with your mouse wheel… Enjoy

Brian, that only changes the zoom level.

I agree. It would make LJ’s much easier to read.

Some sites let you turn-off user avatars. I notice the left hand column takes up quite a bit of real-estate.
If disabling avatars is an option , it might make the main column larger.

My monitor is 1920×1080 but I’m fine with the way it is, when the text is really wide I find it difficult to read which is why I keep my browser window at roughly 2/3 the width of my monitor.

I would request making the site mobile friendly.
