Topic tags/keywords: zuki snow blower

Yea I know it’s a little off topic, however it is powered by an electric motor and it makes noise. :-)

About four years ago I purchased an MTD SnowFox. Here it the link.

http://www.yardmachines.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_10451_18503_90851_36257_-1

After it ran out of warranty it started to have a very strange problem. When I would start blowing snow it would run for about 2 minutes and then shut off. I would press the reset button and wait 30 second or so . . . no go. I would have to leave it for about 10 minutes before it would start running again. It would only run for about 2 minutes . . . and the cycle continued. I got so frustrated that I did not use it last year.

I sent an email to MTD as I was not able to find anything on its site. I have yet to hear from them.

Anyone have any idea of what could be causing such a problem?

Is it made in Mexico?

That could explain it.-;)

I just looked at the website.
It’s a small electric underpowered motor.
Sounds like it’s overheating and opening the thermistor to protect the “delicate” wiring.

Why would you buy something like that?

MTD is useless. I had a Cub Cadet sub-compact that spent more of its first 2 years in the shop getting repaired (under warranty) then it did at my house. I wrote several letters and made several phone calls to MTD about it and their response was always “It’s a mechanical device, things break”. I finally traded it away for a different brand. Good luck.

I agree with the others that MTD is pretty much as cheap as you can get. Take that reset button right out of the circuit as most of the times it is the culprit. Then beat it to death on some snow filled driveway and buy a better one.

What’s a snowblower???? LOL….. ;)

That is one of the reasons I like living south of the mason-dixon line.

I’m thinking that it might be a teen aged snowblower. Teenagers usually only work for 2 or 3 minutes before they quit. -SST

I think Bob#2 has it pegged. The reset button is to protect from an overload (short) but many motors have built in thermal protection devices that protect from overheating. These protective devices open when a certain temperature is reached and then reset when they cool down (like in a Mr. Coffee pot- it shuts down the boiling element when the water reservoir empties).

It is possible that the mechanics of the machine need to be oiled/greased to reduce the friction and thus reducing the load on the motor. In turn, the motor would run cooler.

Hey, just my $.02.

The best lawnmower I ever had was the Canadien built ones, Canada builds solid stuff. This time I went with Kubota though, up here we need a plow or very large snow blower. The farmers have 8’ snow blowers that mount to the 3-pt hitchs of their tractors, we have a 48” blower on our tractor. We only average 5’ of snow a year, plus drifting, lots of drifting. People use drift control fences all over the place.

What where you thinking of? WATER … ELECTRIC. Sorry, I just couldn’t help myself. Get a real snowblower that’s supposed to make noise. There are none better than Honda. 75% of the people in Truckee (snow country) own a Honda.

Being from New Orleans, I don’t know much about snowblowers. But the idea of an electric snowblower makes about as much sense to me as trying to cut St. Augustine grass with an electric lawnmower.

Bob #2 is undoubtedly correct about it shutting down due to overheating. It could be actually overheating, or a bad thermistor, I suppose. Either way, I’d be shopping f or a REAL machine, Zuki.

I think I will take a look at the overheating issue\reset button.

I opted for the electric for several reasons: I can store it anywhere, don’t have to mess with gas and oil and I can use it to clear decks and stairs. For the big jobs I have a Snowbear plow for my Sidekick . . . the blower was for doing smaller areas.
