Topic tags/keywords: cleaning hand plane stanley sweetheart question plane milling today my first quality hand plane came in the mail. i was wondering how to take off the slimy/oily tool preserve stuff off, or do i leave it on? i really need to figure this out before i take it for a test run! thanks michael |

white spirit (or mineral spirit) on a rag to take off the crap, then a wipe over with some paste wax to act as a shield against rust and lubricant. you might find you have more than that to do to tune it up though: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kv1zo9CAxt4 -- Ben, England. |

it seems to be cutting beautifully right out of the box, will min wax finishing paste work? thanks ben! |

that’ll work a treat. I also have a stick of beex wax on hand just to qipe over the sole every now and again, but make sure the paste wax is on all the mating surfaces. glad to hear it’s working well for you. I’m toying with the idea of buying that same plane for shooting ben -- Ben, England. |

I’m sure that it’s a nice plane and all, but what really gets to me is that Stanley has the gall to call them Sweethearts. The real Sweethearts were made in the USA, not Mexico. |
