Topic tags/keywords: books magazines information

What books or magazines do you find useful for woorworking. The only magazine I currently get is WoodSmith. I purchased several years of back issues on ebay and got an idea or two from them. Some of the books I’ve seen in the bookstore don’t seem to be very helpful (maybe I need a better bookstore). If anyone has books that they think are useful, let us know.

Thanks,
Rick

Fine Woodworking and Popular woodworking are good magazines. There are at least 2 magazine related threads on the site.

The books depend on your interests. If you like planes check out my blog entry on plane related books.

I just noticed the other threads about magazines, I should have looked more closely before asking … I was looking for some good information about building cabinets, any books that you have found that do a good job in this area?

I like Wood and Fine Woodworking. I get the occasional Shopsmith and Woodsmith if there is something in them that sparks my interest. Don’t worry about not searching, Rick. As great as the search feature is at LJ, I have a tendancy of just asking before looking to. It’s the sign of a busy mind!

I like the Robert Lange book on cabinets.

I used it extensively to build my cabinets.

Also the Jim Tolpin books are good.

I would second gizmo in that Jim Toplin’s book pictured above is a good resource. It is written for those of us that are currently not professionals, but I think a seasoned WWer would still find it handy to brush up on fundamentals. On the topic of Jim Toplin, “Table Saw Magic” should be on everyone’s shelf or at least checked out at the library. Good stuff in that one, too.

I’ll touch on the books as the magazine opinions were addressed in another thread. For shop projects, I like, “The Ultimate Jigs and Fixtures Handbook”. I got it with a subscription from one of the magazines. Wood magazine publishes many supplementary books. Among these are, “450 Best Ever Shop Tips”, “Best Ever Workshop Solutions”, and “Woodworking Jigs, Homemade Tools, & Shop Organizers (2006)”. All of these seem much like ShopNotes, which is the best.
