So I am going to be making myself a shooting board soon and wanted to know what you all favor for shooting that is not a LA Jack (LV, LN, or similar). The reason I ask is that I won’t be able to afford one of those any time soon, but do have a few vintage Stanley Bailey planes, along with the LV LA block. I also intend to make some infills soon, so I am just wondering if I should plan to build an infill for shooting (like the Brese miter plane) or not. So what say ye, Lumberjocks, favorite shooter that isn’t a LA jack, GO!

I have a Record T-5 which was made to be a shooting board plane. I plan to use my newly restored Stanley #6 for shooting also. I used it a couple of times and it worked very nicely. It has a decent amount of mass and seemed to have no issues with maple end grain.

Any #5 should work, although building an infill would be way cooler.

I prefer my K6. I have many 5’s, but the extra mass of the 6 makes it real easy.

I have the Lee Valley low angle block. Of course it cuts fantastically well. One small problem for me. It is small and I have trouble in keeping the down side of the plane flat on the shooting board. For almost all shooting I use a 605 1/2, Heavy enough to be well mannered.

... okay, I’ll say it.

Is it just me or does ``LA Jack`` sound like a cop/detective tv series??

LA Jack busts up a Jointer filled with Scrubs with his Smoother partner, Stanley.

Ripthorn: Here is my favorite:

I realize that this offers you no help at all since it happens to be a very expensive option, I just wanted to offer an answer to your title “Favorite Shooting Plane That Isn’t LA Jack”...
