I like to work with Padauk. I think it’s beautiful and very workable if you don’t mind your shop turning a bit red.
I’ve been going to a hardwood store here in town that sells a lot of exotic and domestic woods and the other day I picked up a padauk board that was 6 BF 4/4 and the price was 13.49 BF.

I started looking around and I remembered that the guys where I buy my wood said they get some of their wood from a local lumber yard called Shutte. So I emailed them and was quoted ” Surfaced 4/4 Padouk – 3/4” finish, random width and length – sells for $8.54 per board foot. Surfaced 8/4 – 1-5/8” finish, random width and length – sells for $9.21 per board foot.

So I just saved myself about 5$ a BF.
I think that’s pretty exciting.

Always pays to look around. I found a place that is cheaper than my usual spot, but only for larger quantities as they impose a surcharge on every order of $9.

Padauk is nice stuff, I’ve made a couple clocks from it and think it’s good stuff. Bloodwood also is great if you are going for red.

Rip, you don’t see much of that and it’s so similar to padauk that I just get padauk. It’s the purple heart that I think absolutely sucks. The only way I’d use it is to perhaps use it as inlay material.
One of the things I like about padauk is the color it will eventually turn. It’s a very rich brown which is arguably more attractive than the red fresh state.

I am concerned that some places say padauk dust is carcinogenic.
