I have a hankering to make something like this.
But I want to use poplar for the rails and stiles with beadboard panels.

I have never built anything using beadboard so I went to look at Lowe’s. I found some unfinished stuff that I guess is the standard – 5/16 inch thick. And some panneling that resembles hard board.

So my question is what would you use?

I want it sturdy and look good to boot. Most likely I will paint the cabinet white.

Still pondering if I should make my own. I have the tools…some skill… :-)

Suggestions and advice appreciated.
Thanks.
Mike

Going by the picture you would only need MDF pieces between the top and base.

Going all out with rails, stiles and panels would look 10 times better but it’d be a lot of work (routering, joinery) for such a small, purely functional piece that would be painted. But if it’s also meant to be required skills practice for looming bigger and more challenging projects, then you should go for it I’d say.

Beadboard – purely subjective choice regarding overall look only IMO.

That’s just it. I don’t like the idea of mdf. Just seems cheap to me. I know one will be stained. the other may/may not be painted. They (sis-n-law) haven’t decided yet.

By beadboard do you mean beaded ceiling? Lowes has b.c. in a plywood version. Not really the authentic material, but might do for your project.
