Anyone purchasing lumber in Southern California knows that prices are pretty high. I picked up some walnut this morning for 4 bucks a board foot, he has other species listed in the ad.

Wow … a walnut chevalet !! ........ and undoubtedly a walnut press can’t be far behind.
Where was this last week when I was in SD with a vehicle??

Right? Maybe after round one or two of building the chevalet…I hear some people like to build a few prototypes to ensure a proper fit! I’ll have to tough it it out with a load of beech for starters…

Erik, I was thinking the same as Paul when I saw your post.
Maybe you need to visit some of your relatives In Michigan with a u-haul :). I just picked up a load of some rough cut Ash this morning myself. I have been working all day on straight edging and planning it up and started to laminate it together to form the bigger supports for my chevalet. I know it won’t look as good as a walnut one but it will have to do as well.

Don’t need prototypes Eric, just build in adjust-ability.
If I can be of any help to either of you, let me know.
I have hundreds (literally) of construction photos.
